Everyone loves free food, so when five thousand people were fed with only five loaves and two fishes, it is understandable that more people went to see Jesus as He walked around Lake Galilee.
If Jesus was after popularity, He would have offered them more food. Instead, he told the crowds about their need for everlasting life, not just bread that leaves them hungry the next day.
Staking His claim that He is God the Son, He forthrightly told them that “I am the bread of life” because He can give them eternal life.
“Whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst,” Jesus declared.
“All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away... My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
