New Year’s resolutions are good but what if you only have 24 hours left to live?
If you were to take a guess at the top 10 most common New Year's Resolutions, what would they be?
Last year's top 10, according to a survey conducted by the University of Scranton, USA, included: spend more time with family, fall in love, help others, quit smoking, learn something exciting, stay fit and healthy, enjoy life to the fullest, spend less and save more, get organised and, coming in at number one, lose weight.
As 2015 approaches, do any of these goals resonate with you? A new year marks a fresh beginning and an opportunity to improve our quality of life. The problem is, we assume we have another year ahead to achieve our goals.
What would your resolutions look like if you knew you only had 6 months or just 24 hours left to live? Would they be the same?
I think life would look very different if we knew exactly how many days we had left. Suddenly things like learning a new language, saving for a house deposit or moving up the career ladder could seem much less important than spending time with loved ones and searching for answers to what lies ahead after death.
After all, death is inevitable. Yet, is it the end of it all? It sounds a bit morbid but how often have you asked yourself this question?
If there is nothing after this life we neither lose nor gain anything...but what if there is? Are you confident with your answer?
Jesus put it this way, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News (of Jesus Christ), you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?" (Mark 8:34-37).
Before you commit to losing weight, saving for that next big holiday or whatever else it may be, make it your goal to find answers to the big questions.
You might have a year.
You might only have today.
