Many sleepless nights passed in prison while Abraham Lichakane lay gripped by fear and despair.
"I was so restless and I had no peace or happiness in my life," Abraham says. "Eventually I just gave up hope and thought about dying a lot."
Life had been good as a child but as a teenager he thought happiness would come from smoking, getting drunk, womanizing, stealing and fighting.
Instead of peace and happiness, things ended in a big mess.
Sitting miserable in prison, Abraham thought of all his wrong-doing and wondered if there was any way to be saved from it all and start fresh.
"Then one day I read from the Word of God in John chapter 3 verse 16, which says, 'God so loved the world that He gave His only Son [Jesus], that whoever believes in Him will not die but will have everlasting life'," he recalls.
"I was struck by the fact that God loved me despite all I had done!"
As he read more, he was amazed to find that God Himself, Jesus Christ, would come to earth and take the punishment he deserved so that he could start fresh with God.
"I wanted to be saved from God's punishment in hell, I wanted desperately to go to heaven," he says.
"I knew that accepting Jesus into my life would mean I would need to leave the things I had been doing before. They did not bring me happiness anyway, only emptiness.
"I also read that God would give me power to leave all these wrong things behind."
So Abraham prayed to God, asking for forgiveness and for the Holy Spirit to come into his life to help guide him.
"I found peace in Jesus Christ and not fear anymore, because, as the Bible says, 'perfect love drives out fear' [1 John 4:18] and that is the kind of love that God has for me," he says.
"Now I want to tell everyone else about God and how He offers peace, hope and eternal life to all who trust in Him, no matter who they are or what they have done. I know I can overcome the devil, because I have God on my side," he says joyfully.
