The word 'character' comes from the Greek word for an engraving tool. The engraver or artist makes a mark or groove on a metal or wooden plate by repeatedly etching in the same place with the sharp engraving tool.
Our characters are created in a similar way. Any behaviour or attitude repeated over and over forms a part of our character. Behaviour and character are linked. They say that if you do something for 40 days in a row it will become a habit and a part of your character.
Are there bad behaviours, character traits and habits you would like to change? The Bible tells us, if we put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ, we can change with help from the Holy Spirit!
Even if times are hard, remember God's promise from Romans chapter 5 verse 3 to 5, "We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us."
Many people want Christian character and godly attitudes but do little to form them in their lives. It is only as we obey Jesus Christ, allow the Holy Spirit to work through us and choose and repeat helpful behaviour that our character is formed. Read the Bible, pray, attend church, choose behaviour that will grow a character that pleases God. •
