Music changed my life

KapFresh shares the purpose beyond his emerging music career.

Hip hop artist Koketso Motseothata, also known as KapFresh, has already won three music awards and has been Artist of the Month in 21 different online African magazines.

After only three years as an artist, Koketso's latest single Won't stop! is the official soundtrack of SABC 1 Mzanzi Insider station.

"My aim is to share God's Word through hip hop music in different fresh and exciting ways," Koketso explains, who calls himself "The God-fearing artist".

He says he wants to be "The rapper that brings a blessing (from God) within every verse."

And he owes it all to the encouragement of his grandmother to pursue music but also God.

"My grandmother gives me constant support – she believes in me," Koketso says.

As his grandmother was "always there" for him Koketso says he wondered as a child, "How does she stay so strong through everything and be positive through financial and personal conflicts?"

"In everything my grandmother's answer was, 'I may not know a lot of things in life, but one thing I do know is how to pray!'"

So impressed by his grandmother's life, in his early teen years, Koketso says, "I made the personal decision to become born-again", meaning that he surrendered his life to the Lord Jesus Christ.

In his teens Koketso was excited about God, memorising parts of the Bible to compete in a regional 'Bible challenge' at age 16.

Then he admits he wandered away from Jesus until he sensed God was calling him to make music.

After high school, he recalls "A close friend invited me to a music studio session and it just fascinated me. I am a huge music lover, so I instantly was in love with the process of music creation."

He wondered whether he would succeed as an artist, so he asked God and read his Bible.

"Before starting my music career I prayed, 'Lord, if I promise to give it my all in this music thing, will you protect me, will you enable me to succeed in this industry?'

"The first passage I read in the Bible was Proverbs 30, verse 5, which says; 'Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.'"

He was also encouraged by Hebrews chapter 11: "This passage speaks about faith, and it always reminds me how I've come far with God," he says.

Verse six of this chapter reads: "Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."

Koketso says these Bible verses placed a positive burden on him to "be closer to God" and, by putting God first, his career has been blessed.

"In the industry today there are not many artists like myself where we are confident in the Word of God, and mention it in our lyrics."

And as God is in control of his life, Koketso hopes this encourages many to give their lives to God.

"I want my testimony to be proof that giving your life to God is the best thing you can ever do for yourself. I want my life to follow the saying, 'I don't care what people say about me, and instead I care about what God knows about me!'"

Kokesto concludes with the advice that his grandmother gave him, to pray and put God first.

"Always keep God first place, He will take you to places you have never even dreamed of," he says.
