A fear of sickness and death consumed Letisia Mahlathini day after day. Consulting traditional healers to relieve her distress, she found they were not always helpful.

"I feared death to the extreme," Letisia says. "I had all my trust in witchdoctors, and I consulted them in every situation for the right decision."

She says for a time, "I felt protected because they could tell me what was happening before I even encountered the problem."

Then Letisia became seriously sick and had pains in her side in 2003, a condition she had encountered before.

"The witchdoctor announced that I was bewitched and that I had to throw out what was inside me. He gave me some traditional medicines for this but my condition only worsened."

She soon became unable to even take care of herself so her family decided to take her to hospital.

The doctor advised that she needed to have an emergency operation after putting her under a scan.

"Though I had the operation, I was worried and troubled as to why the witchdoctor had not noticed it," Letisia recalls.

"Having this sickness made me realise that I was doing wrong."

While she recovered in hospital a Christian pastor visited and began telling her about the goodness, love and forgiveness of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The pastor shared Jesus' words in John chapter 3, verse 16: "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son [Jesus], that whoever believes in Him should not perish (eternally) but have eternal life."

Although she was physically sick, Leticia realised she was also spiritually sick, as Jesus explained in Mark chapter 2 verse 17, when He said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

The sickness He was referring to were sins that separate people from God. These are actions and thoughts like lying, lustful thoughts, worship of false gods, witchcraft, stealing, and jealousy over others' possessions.

The preacher declared that Jesus is God, and He came to earth to take the deserved punishment for sin so that if people accept God's cure through Jesus each person's spiritual sickness could be healed.

"The pastor showed me that only God can protect us through accepting the good news of Jesus Christ," Letisia recalls.

Hearing this good news about Jesus' healing power, Letisia says she recognised that God was asking her to respond to Him.

"I realised the love of God and His power to heal and I also realised my sinful and selfish deeds," she says.

That day Letisia decided to believe in what Jesus did for her on the cross, and that He rose again to give her everlasting life as His free gift and cure.

When she left hospital Letisia noticed God had given her an entirely new attitude and helped her see that she did not need to rely on anything other than Jesus.

"I never wanted to hear anything about the witchdoctors. I have received Jesus Christ as my one and only Saviour who gives everlasting life and I no longer have any fear," she says joyfully.

Letisia has no fear because of what 1 John chapter 5 verse 18 says, "We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but God's Son [Jesus] protects him, and the evil one [the devil] does not touch him."

"Jesus appeared in my life and I am now 'spiritually born again'," she explains.

"Now I am one of the happiest women in the world."

"There will be no more turning back to where I was, because Jesus gives me all the strength I need."
