Being poor and living in poverty was Mxolisi Ngwkana's excuse for being angry and stealing until God showed him a better way to live.
"My life was tough growing up because my father died when I was young and I was raised by my single mother. Money and finances were never in my favour," Mxolisi begins.
"As a result I resorted to crime."
Mxolisi says in his anger he became addicted to the pursuit of money because he felt the pressure to provide for his family.
"I have kids of my own and they need to eat so I would do all the kinds of crimes like heists and hijacking cars," he confesses.
Eventually he was caught and convicted for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and a stolen car.
Now serving out a sentence in prison, Mxolisi says God has changed his perspective on life.
"I was once a (committed) Christian but due to my circumstances I was backslidden (turned away) from the Word of God," he says.
Yet in prison Mxolisi heard a pastor preach a message that spoke to him.
The pastor quoted the book of James 1, verses 20 to 22, which says, "A man's anger does not allow him to be right with God. Put out of your life all that is unclean and wrong. Receive with a gentle spirit the Word that was taught. It has the power to save your souls from the punishment of sin. Obey the Word of God. If you hear only and do not act, you are only fooling yourself."
"The pastor really touched my heart by sharing the Word of God, he opened my spiritual ears and eyes to seek God," Mxolisi recalls.
"I've accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Saviour because I want to live a life that pleases God and I want to be there for my children and introduce them to God as well."
Rather than respond to God in anger about his situation Mxolisi now relies on God to help him through the hard times that he and his family are experiencing.
"Now that I have Christ in my life, I know the Lord will make a way for me if I lead a life that pleases God," he says.
"God has helped me overcome the temptations to do the wrong things through my faith in Christ. I am now very patient and I do not get angry like I used to.
"I am more understanding and I have courage (by faith in Jesus) to accept the things I can't change about my circumstances.
"I want to encourage others to do the will of God because there is life in abundance in Christ."•
