Prisoner Donald Maloka was not a religious man but when he heard that Jesus could save him from the bad things he had done and give him love, joy and peace, then he said to himself "I need this Jesus in my life".
Donald, in prison for housebreaking, rape and theft, had never been exposed to Christianity until fellow inmate Adam gave him a Bible and explained about God's offer of salvation through Jesus' death on the cross for mankind's sins.
Adam's life was an amazing example, because, although Adam was behind bars like Donald was, Adam seemed so free.
"I asked him how he can live so free while being a captive," Donald recalls, "And he said that Philippians 4:13 in the Bible says that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
"I saw that living a Christian life was very good - you don't live in bondage - and I decided that I was going to accept this Jesus and live a free life," Donald shares.
Donald says that God has made a profound impact on his life. "I have accepted Jesus as my Lord and Saviour and read the Word of God each and every day now. I know that Christ is with me [in the form of] the Holy Spirit of God all the time.
"I've learned to have patience and love for others no matter what, regardless of the circumstances. Most importantly, I've learned to forgive others - that's how I see that God is living in my life.
"When I was imprisoned at 22, I almost gave up hope for my future but as soon as I accepted Jesus my hope was restored. In 2013 I started school in Grade 8 and I never gave up, even when I failed. Now I am in Grade 11."
Donald says that although he still struggles with some addictions, he knows that nothing is impossible with God.
"I still struggle with jealousy, hatred, stealing, lying and smoking, but I know that with Christ in my life, I am going to overcome those sins.
"I will never leave Jesus and He will never leave me or forsake me, and I thank Him each and every time for being there for me even though I face storms in life," declares Donald.
"I would just like others to know that Jesus is good all the time."•
