Marrying yourself

On a rooftop in Brooklyn, Erika Anderson put on a vintage-style white wedding dress, stood before a circle of her closest friends, and committed herself — to herself. She married herself.

Sasha Cagen, married herself when she turned 40. She says “I vowed to trust myself, to see myself as beautiful, to accept my imperfections and the imperfections of others.”

It is good that people are so comfortable with who they are and that they want to commit to marry themselves. Yet this really defeats the purpose of marriage.

The beginning of the Bible we hear God say to Adam, “It is not good for anyone to be alone”. That is the purpose of marriage. Not to feel better about yourself but to share life, the good and the bad with another person. It is the design God has for all of us.
