David Molefe was a little boy of 10 when his mother died, leaving him filled with unforgiveness for her killer and setting him on the path to crime.
Then, at age 16, he and a friend raped three girls one night and he ended up in jail, hating himself for what he had done and hating others for the events that had led him to that place.
"I was sexually immoral and controlled by alcohol, hatred and pride," David, ironically known as Nice, confesses. "I used to have affairs with other men's wives and girlfriends because I was proud. I saw myself as more important than others."
But in prison David, who had had no exposure to Christianity before, saw people going to church and decided to go along.
"I heard about Jesus here in prison from other inmates like me and from pastors that visited from outside. When I saw that Jesus gave the other prisoners salvation from their sins, I realised that I really needed this God too.
"On 4 December 2013 I accepted Christ as my Lord and Saviour," David remembers.
David read in Ephesians 5 about how the fruit of the Spirit of God is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control, and knew there was nothing he could do but accept Jesus as his Lord and become a Christian.
Now David no longer sees himself as better than others and is no longer filled with hatred, but has forgiven those who hurt him, and has asked for forgiveness from others.
He says that as he spends time reading the Bible and praying he has overcome his addictions and has started loving and caring for others.
"God is really good. That's why He sent His only Son to die for us. Only God can give you the power to leave gangs. You can know how to read and interpret the Word [Bible]. God has a plan for your life, to prosper you, not to harm you (see Jeremiah 29:11). Read the Word!" David encourages.
"To lose your parent doesn't mean that it is over for you. God will be your parent.
"I ended up knowing how to sing and preach and play drums in a band. It's not because of me, it's because of God's love for me," David declares.•
