Never Forsaken

One night, high on crack cocaine, Frikkie Boshoff visited a drug dealer who asked as soon as he opened the door, "What is that darkness that surrounds you?"

Those insightful words from that unlikely source led to a suicide attempt that would change Frikkie's life forever.

"With those words ringing in my ears," Frikkie recalls, "I found my way home, locked myself inside, took every pill I could find and cut my left wrist.

"I was consumed by darkness. I'd had enough."

Frikkie's life had not been easy.

"It was tough! I grew up in a home where dependence was placed in substances, an unstable home with no security.

"There were many nights where we had to flee from home to find a place to sleep because my drunken father verbally and physically abused us.

"It was during one night's playfulness at one of these 'sleepovers' that my innocence was stolen when I was molested.

"I placed my dependence in cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, fornication and ancestral worship but still ended up hopeless," he recalls.

"I had to lie and steal in order to feed my addiction. Pushed into a corner with nowhere to go, gripped by anger, unforgiveness, depression, anxiety, addiction, deceitfulness and rejection, I had nothing to live for.

"I was a dead man walking."

His fiancé, Leoné, who is now his wife, found him bleeding on the couch and took him to the hospital.

Frikkie, who had only ever been to church once with his family, was taken to a Christian counsellor after his suicide attempt.

"While in prayer in one of the counselling sessions God gave me a spiritual vision. I was reliving my molestation, only this time I wasn't scared," Frikkie recalls.

"The counsellor asked me 'Where is Jesus, Frikkie?', as I looked up Jesus was standing in the doorway. Jesus was holding me, as a young boy, on His hip.

"In my mind I wanted to ask, 'Jesus where were you?' But even before I could ask, Jesus answered, 'I was always here.'

"I burst into tears and at that moment I received Jesus Christ into my heart and life by telling Him I was sorry for all the wrong things I has done and that I wanted to give my life over to Him."

Since that encounter with Jesus, Frikkie says that he has walked out of the darkness into the light.

"God destroyed the walls I had put up over time and He removed my hard heart, gave me a tender heart and put a new spirit in me, an enthusiastic spirit that craves so much, a spirit I cannot contain.

"Now that I walk in the Light (of God) I have the will to live. I appreciate and enjoy life knowing that there is a plan and purpose for my life. I have a Father that is ever present.

"God has healed me from my addictions and restored my failed relationships."

Frikkie, who is now a pastor, proudly declares, "I am Jesus' junkie!"

"Despite what I did or what I became Jesus never gave up on me. Jesus has a junkie heart towards me and I now have a junkie heart towards Him.

"I put out my hand, opened my heart and He loosened an insatiable craving (for Him) within me that this world can never take away."
