Timothy Sekhukhune's life was in such a mess when he was younger that he was ready to end it.
He grew up in a wonderful family but, like so many in Soweto, they struggled financially as his dad was the only breadwinner.
Timothy's family did not go to church as they followed traditional beliefs but Timothy was keen to know more about God, so at age 12 he started to read the Bible to see if it was true and if God was real.
"As I read the Word of God I was hooked by its truth," he says. "As I researched the Bible I realised that God is real and that Jesus is real and alive, and my curiosity drove me to know more."
The Bible convicted him of his need of a Saviour but he struggled to surrender himself to Jesus. "I realised that I was able to come to Jesus because of the undeserved loved of God as He spoke to me through His Word but I put it off as I wanted to enjoy life a bit more and thought that after I was married and had children I could get right with God," he confesses.
However, delaying the decision did not give Timothy more freedom or fun and eight years after starting his research into the Bible, his life was a mess.
At 20 he was considering suicide when some verses came to his mind from Matthew chapter 11, where Jesus says: "Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and My burden is light." (verses 28-30).
"I questioned whether God could really give me peace in my spirit.I told Him that I would give Him my life, but if He failed to give me His peace, then two months later I would commit suicide and He would have to accept my spirit."
God did give Timothy the peace he so badly needed and a song that goes "I never knew life like this, before, before."
"The greatest change was feeling the Spirit of the Lord within me," Timothy shares. "When I am let down by circumstances, His Spirit keeps me going; when I am angry, His Spirit gives me peace.
"All my knowledge about the Bible was not enough to save me, it was God's grace [undeserved kindness] that brought me to the place of surrender," he acknowledges. "Christianity is the only religion that can genuinely unite people in peace, love, joy and happiness. These are only found in Jesus Christ.
"I have seen God bless my family financially. I have seen God change my attitudes, such as being impatient. I have been blessed to see all my family become Christians. One verse that has been a real blessing to me is Acts chapter 16 verse 31 which says, 'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved, you and your household.'"•
