Lucas Banda

The church Pastor chose me to be secretary," says Lucas Banda as he recalls his life experiences.

From childhood Lucas attended church with his parents, and although he accepted God was creator of all things including mankind, Lucas did not have any spiritual interest.

Even though he showed no evidence in his life of spiritual interest, he was chosen to do the church secretarial work.

Jesus Christ was asked about just such work (John 6:28-29) "Then they said to him, What must we do, to be doing the works of God? Jesus answered them, This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent." Does his answer surprise you? He did not ask them to do the best they could, or even to join a church, but rather to believe that God sent Jesus into this world to be our Saviour.

"I was doing all the work of the church, but yet I was beer drinking and committing adultery," confesses Lucas, "I was not a born again Christian. I was behaving badly, and was without Christ."

Beer drinking had become so much a part of his life that Lucas lost his job because of drunkenness. This had an immediate and huge impact upon him and his family.

"At that time even my home life was being destroyed, I was living a desperate life, without hope at all." He continues, "I had no peace, I was lonely, and I was going from bad to worse in my daily life not knowing God has his eye upon me."

It was these desperate circumstances that caused Lucas to begin to search for peace with God his creator.

John 3:16 and 36 says: ‘For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life’ ... ‘Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.’

1 John 5:12–13 says: ‘Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.’

A day that Lucas remembers well was December16th 1985, when he was twenty one years old. The church was holding a prayer fellowship meeting in his family home. "They read from John's Gospel," tells Lucas, "chapter 3 and verses 16 and 36, and also First John chapter 5 verses 12 and 13."

"After hearing these verses I was really touched in my heart and I received Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour."

Lucas remembers praying "Lord Jesus Christ come into my heart, I know I am a sinner before you, wash my sins away. Thank you for dying for me and being crucified on the cross. You rose again (from the dead). Thank you for giving me power to become your son."

To be a born again Christian just means that that person has repented of their sinful life and given their whole life over to the control of Jesus Christ as their Lord. The Spirit of God enters that person immediately, and they have a new beginning (birth) which is in God. This person discovers that they have peace with God and a power to overcome temptation to sin.

Lucas Gabriel Banda has now been a Christian for over 30 years, he continues to find his Saviour dependable and true.

"Thanks be to God that after committing my life to Christ, I always have peace, and we have peace in my family," adds Lucas.

I was
lost,
dead in
my sins
As a family they pray together, read the Bible together, and meet with other true Christians.

"All those (bad) things I used to do, like the beer drinking, I have completely stopped by my Lord's power; he helps me to be faithful in my daily living."

To anyone struggling with drunkenness, or who is enslaved by any type of sin, Lucas says, "Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world, he is the only one able to save people. Believe (trust fully) in him.

"I was lost, dead in my sins, but now I am found and made alive through the death of the Lord on the cross, and by his resurrection." He concludes, "The work of a saved person (rescued out of their sins) is to testify about our Lord Jesus Christ."
