In 2012, high on drugs and drink, Vusumzi Gatsi, known as Yster, stabbed and murdered his girlfriend.
He was so confused and in such a lost place that he says "At the time, I did not know what I was doing was wrong."
He didn't care about anything, including his own family and certainly had no thought for spiritual things or what Jesus might think of his behaviour.
Yster was sentenced to 12 years in prison, of which he has already served five.
In that time though, a profound and complete change has taken place in the 42-year-old's life.
In prison he was invited to church where he was profoundly affected by a sermon about how man is just dust, of no value in himself but that God loves us and died for us.
Later, Yster joined a Bible study and these lessons led him to realise that something needed to change in his life.
"I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Saviour, now I don't do drugs or drink – the only drug I am on is coffee! My attitude has changed and now I love people.
"I pray every day for myself and that everyone in South Africa will become Christians."
Although changing his lifestyle and attitudes has not always been easy, Yster acknowledges that "with Jesus as your Lord, nothing is impossible. Just give Him your faith and love and He gives everything you need in return."•
